Axe Cutting...

It happened again last summer. This guy was using an axe to cut wood, and he ended up cutting his leg as well. To make matters worse, he was chopping the firewood in the wee hours of the morning. If you are in an organized camp ground pleasse build your evening fire in the morning. Morning is also a good time to accomplish other tasks, too. What's with cutting wood after 12: PM?

I PREFER A SAW OVER AN AXE OR HATCHET. If I have to, I would select a hatchet over an axe any day. MOST PEOPLE I'VE OBSERVED don't know how to use an axe, and they make me feel uncomfortable. A lot don't know how to use a hatchet either.

When I do use a hatchet, I use a handmade device that allows me to hold the log steady as I chop a smaller log. It provides me with an element of safety that assures, in part, that I will not hurt myself. It keeps my hands and especially fingers away from the centre.

You could use a piece of wood, too, but I like the idea of making my own equipment.

The reality is, I've never found a time when I really needed an axe. There is plenty of wood, and I don't need to perform like a lumberman to knock down a dead tree or otherwise to make a campfire.
