    HERE IS A LIST OF MODERN SKILLS THAT ONE NEEDS TO BE A SUCCESSFUL *CAMPER

    or at least - goals that you can set for yourself to be one.
    Camping is not just about equipment - it is how to use equipment and our natural surroundings well.
    *CAMPER IN THIS CASE MEANS TENT CAMPER WHICH IS INTENSE.

    • Use No Trace Camping techniques
    • Cook foods properly over an open fire
    • Know multiple ways to start a fire
    • Be able to cook using a variety of different camp stoves including a home made one
    • Be able to put out a fire safely - check with Smoky the Bear
    • Manage food stuffs outdoors, know how to use a bear bag, and practice handling food safely
    • Learn how to tie a reef knot, bowline, Canadian Jam and others
    • Correctly sharpen a knife
    • Safely use a knife, a hatchet and saw
    • Identify dangerous plants and how to avoid them
    • Take a wilderness survival course or at least a first aid course with wilderness modules
    • Learn to hunt both small and large game - if you are planning to be a survivalist
    • Choose a safe spot for a campsite
    • Pitch a tent correctly and know how to use a shelter
    • Learn to navigate using a compass
    • Learn to stay cool/warm and conserve energy
    • Recognize tracks of various animals and practice safe avoidance habits
    • Know how to find water in the wilderness
    • Know how to filter and purify water
    • Know how to navigate using the sun and stars
    • Develop survival outdoor skills in the winter
    • Learn to avoid becoming lost and what to do if it happens
    • Know how to put a Bug Bag together or at least a survival pack
    • Learn to canoe using the proper strokes and take necessary courses
    • Learn to swim well and be able to do that being fully clothed
    • Learn to think safety
    • Know how to manage personal hygiene and adhere to camp etiquette
    How did you do? There are 27 listed in the skills set.
    REMEMBER no one is expecting you to have all 27 when you start out.
    Camping is learning new skills, having fun and being with the people you enjoy most.
